CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra held a press conference on September 6 to update residents that deputies executing a search warrant at a residence tied to a Mission murder were fired upon by 51-year-old Paulino Guerra Jr—who had killed 36-year-old Felipe Mancilla during a drug deal gone wrong, injuring one deputy before being shot dead. - ➤ Janet Murguía, president and CEO of UnidosUS, warned at the Latina Leadership Conference in Mission that federal funding cuts for Hispanic-Serving Institutions like UT-Rio Grande Valley will hurt students and the local economy—she urged Congress to restore support. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ PSJA ISD is proposing two bonds totaling nearly $60 million to fund school building upgrades and performing arts center renovations—using over $54 million for building improvements and more than $5 million to renovate performing arts facilities, with funds planned for roof, HVAC, and parking lot repairs at Southwest Early College High School.
