BUSINESS NEWS

  • A family-run bait shop on South Padre Island Highway sold a $78 million Texas Lotto ticket, marking the sixth largest jackpot win in state history. The owners—operating since 1972—felt excitement as they received many congratulatory calls from locals even though the store does not get a cash reward.  KRGV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rosa Esthela Mora—an internationally recognized author and educator from the Rio Grande Valley—published her award-winning romance novel 'Becoming Sofia Bosco' in 2021 and later wrote a sequel after strong reader demand. She now teaches French and Spanish at Valley View ISD and uses her language skills to inspire local students.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters rejected a proposed bond on November 4 that would have replaced leaking roofs, aging air conditioners, and outdated windows in most Brownsville ISD schools—Superintendent Jesus H. Chavez said the district will rely on emergency repairs until community support leads to another bond election. He warned that using fund balances for piecemeal fixes may cause ongoing discomfort for students and teachers.  MyRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City workers removed five overgrown Brazilian pepper trees along the Brownsville Historic Battlefield Hike and Bike Trail because the invasive species was harming native vegetation—Parks and Recreation Director Sean De Palma said the city will inspect 37 miles of trails and parks and replant cleared areas with native plants.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. DHR Health Hospice explains that palliative care eases symptoms while curative treatments continue—hospice care helps patients when treatment to cure has ended by focusing on comfort and quality of life.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Health officials in Cameron and Hidalgo counties reported a rise in whooping cough cases, with Cameron recording 74 and Hidalgo 151 cases this year compared to lower numbers last year—more than 3,500 cases have been reported statewide. They urge families to update vaccinations as the infection, which can cause severe coughing fits in children, may lead to hospitalizations.  KRGV
