COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tony Garcia, a Vietnam veteran and founder of Warriors United in Arms in Brownsville, is safeguarding a U.S. flag saved during the fall of Saigon and a refurbished Vietnam-era helicopter—rescued from recycling in Fort Worth—for display at Veterans Park and IBC Bank. The group meets monthly to honor veterans who served in Vietnam.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brownsville Fire Department celebrated 150 years on Wednesday at the Brownsville Event Center where many current and retired firefighters gathered to view historic equipment. Fire Chief Jared Sheldon said the event honored the department's growth (from 12 firefighters to more than 200) and looked ahead to a strong future.  KRGV
  • Mayor John Cowen reported that October brought milestones such as a $1.2 million donation for a new fire truck—boosting the fire department, a historic SpaceX flight test, a new PBS documentary on rails-to-trails, and a job expo with over 5,000 job seekers. He also said he was named Chair of the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization to manage over a billion dollars in funds and broke ground on the Embassy Suites by Hilton—steps that will boost local jobs and tourism.  Rio Grande Guardian
