COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, a ceremony at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2410 in Harlingen honored 62 Rio Grande Valley veterans by awarding them ceremonial pins. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez hosted the event and Los Indios native Jaime Sanchez (one of the honorees) said he will always remain a veteran and plans a military funeral when he passes.  KRGV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Brownsville veteran’s home caught fire Friday evening off Paredes Line and Price roads, forcing James Patrick Morales, his father and his grandmother to leave everything behind as he returned later to salvage belongings while investigators worked to determine the cause.  KRGV

  • Small business owners will learn how artificial intelligence can improve operations — from marketing automation to inventory management — during an upcoming webinar hosted by UTRGV SBDC and supported by local economic groups. CULTURE NEWS

  • Bishop Daniel Flores from Brownsville was elected vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Tuesday—he will serve a three-year term and work with Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley; the diocese congratulated him and urged local prayers for his new role.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley director of grants and government relations (Rodriguez) said SNAP funding helps low-income families and supports local jobs in the region. He explained that the program’s dollars boost the local economy by circulating money among local businesses.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • La Feria ISD will break ground on its first $3 million baseball and softball complex on Tuesday, Nov. 18, which will have two fields and batting cages on campus—saving students a 10-minute bus ride to a distant practice facility. The project, funded by a recent bond, is set to be ready by March 2026.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Inspectors with the Texas Animal Health Commission checked trailers carrying cattle on Tuesday off Highway 281 south of Falfurrias for signs of screwworm, foot and mouth disease, and cattle fever ticks. They conducted these inspections as the first line of defense to keep the pest from reaching the Rio Grande Valley — an area still free of screwworm despite over 800 active cases reported in Mexico.  KRGV
