  • The RGV Hispanic Chamber is hosting the Manic Monday Mixer at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville on November 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Business owners will network and create new contacts — a monthly event designed to build valuable professional relationships.  Rio Grande Guardian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Diane Milliken Garza, Texas Commission on the Arts Commissioner and CEO of the RGV Philanthropic Foundation, spoke at the 5th Annual Art of the Giving Banquet at the Creative Arts Studio in San Juan on October 23, where she introduced a plan for a Regional Fine Art Conservatory. The after-school program will serve students from four counties, helping to build local talent, create jobs, and boost cultural tourism—promising to elevate the region’s art heritage.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PossAble Dream Adult High School opened its Brownsville campus in the fall to help adults 18 to 50 earn a high school diploma while managing work and family (site coordinator Ceci Gomez said the school offers flexible schedules and career placement support) and it is part of a foundation with campuses in Pharr, Brownsville and Laredo (the effort comes as only 72.9 percent of South Texas residents hold a high school degree).  Rio Grande Guardian
  • At PossAble Dream Adult High School in Brownsville, teacher Steven Merian uses real world examples in math and student Steven Galvan is grateful for a second chance at earning his diploma—both share that the school feels like a true community.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Superintendent Jesus Chavez said there are no plans to bring back the two failed bond proposals totaling $460 million after voters rejected them Tuesday—he added that the district will work on fixing issues like HVAC problems instead of waiting for new votes to fix campuses.  KRGV
