- ➤ On Oct 24, a fire in La Grulla destroyed the mobile home of newlywed UTRGV student Guadalupe Vargas Rodriguez and her family — they escaped safely with her two younger brothers but lost irreplaceable items such as a wedding dress, laptop, and school supplies while staying with relatives as they plan a fresh start. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. unveiled a report showing SpaceX generated a gross economic output of $13 billion and supported 24,000 local jobs. The report noted that SpaceX employed over 4,000 workers—70% of whom are local—and county officials said the company’s move of its corporate headquarters promises more jobs and future investments in our area. - ➤ Workforce Solutions Cameron's CEO Rafael Vela said a $350,000 Texas Talent Connection Grant announced on Oct. 23 at the Harlingen Workforce Center will fund Project INTERN to train over 230 young adults for in-demand jobs. The agency also announced a $100,000 Healthcare Internship Grant and a $250,000 Workforce Innovation Fund for Project CRANE to expand job opportunities. Rio Grande Guardian

- ➤ Eric Saenz, a citrus grove owner near Edinburg for 20 years, said his orchard has suffered from a long drought that dried the soil and forced layoffs as reservoir levels dropped below 27 percent. Mexican authorities missed the Oct 25 water delivery deadline under a 1944 treaty, leaving regional growers struggling for needed irrigation. KRGV

- ➤ The City of Brownsville’s Procurement Department will host a regional vendor fair on November 20 at the Brownsville Event Center that offers educational sessions from 9:00 to 12:00 and networking opportunities from 1:00 to 4:30 with breakfast and lunch provided — the event will help vendors learn how to do business with local departments. - ➤ Breast cancer survivor Elvia Gibbs founded Tita's Tatas Foundation to offer free breast screenings and educate women on early detection after her diagnosis and treatment. - ➤ South Texas Health System is offering special pricing for 2D mammograms at $100 and 3D mammograms at $155 to conclude its Heart of the Valley campaign, which promotes breast cancer awareness and screening.
