- ➤ A Santa Rosa cattle rancher is monitoring the New World Screwworm threat after a case was found 70 miles away in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León—he is applying an oil-based insecticide on his cattle while trying to sell his heifers for $4,500 each. - ➤ UTRGV’s Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center in Pharr won a national award for RGV StartUp Week from the University Economic Development Association; Linda Ufland accepted the honor in Huntsville, Alabama + she later presented prizes to entrepreneurs completing the Kauffman FastTrac program. - ➤ The government has provided a $300 million boost to the WIC program to ensure food and nutrition support for families during the shutdown—this funding from tariff revenue will keep the program running for a few more weeks if the shutdown continues. - ➤ Brownsville Metro will partner with Uber to offer discounted rides for residents living within a mile of the discontinued Route 30, which served only about six riders. The $30,000 pilot program will run for one year and provide eligible residents with a $14 Uber voucher code beginning Saturday, Nov. 1—helping them try a new travel option. KRGV
- ➤ Inside the federal courthouse in Brownsville, 59 people from four countries took an oath on Wednesday to become American citizens. Jaime Castelltort, who arrived in June 2015 and spent 10 years as a legal resident, applied in July and finished his citizenship process in three months so he can now help his mother apply. KRGV
- ➤ A DACA recipient who completed his commercial truck driver training had his license declared invalid when state officials halted renewals for non-domicile applicants—he has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and now considers moving for a new career as trucking companies will not hire him. The policy, announced in August by federal and state agencies, also left other trainees in limbo. KRGV
- ➤ Cameron County will launch a $12 million project to upgrade Isla Blanca Park RV sites on South Padre Island with a groundbreaking ceremony set for October 23 at 10:00 a.m. All 577 RV sites will be closed for one year while electrical, water and wastewater systems are modernized and Dodson and Emerald Streets are realigned to improve access.
