COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, Brownsville held a ceremony called Petals on the Lake to honor domestic violence survivors—guests tossed petals into the resaca near TSC Performing Arts Center while survivor Veronica Rivas recounted her near-fatal abuse and district attorneys noted that violence still affects the Valley.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students in Brownsville are offered a free chance to design, build and launch a rocket through Project Vortex by STARSociety, with the program starting this fall and a planned launch in June aiming for 10,000 feet. The initiative is set to boost interest in aerospace careers—students will work in teams handling structures, avionics, operations and outreach.  KSAT
  • Grulla High School’s Julian Zarate was named Student of the Week and has served as class council president for four years as well as vice-president of the student council and a member of the National Honor Society — he volunteers in his community and performs with Mariachi Grulla De Plata while planning to study government at UT Austin to become an attorney in honor of his late father.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Ryan Guillen said new legislation allows Rio Grande Valley cities to work together on brackish water desalination projects—he noted that pooling resources makes the projects more affordable than developing them individually.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Today, Condado de Cameron issued a final public notice on a water and sewer project in Saldivar—Central Estates that will replace 41 septic systems and benefit 197 residents with low to moderate incomes. The county will request TxCDBG funds later today and is accepting public comments until October 28.  Cameron County
  • City officials approved funding on Tuesday for the Dennett Road reconstruction project covering a 4,400-foot stretch from Old Alice to Queens roads that will add a 36-foot roadway with curb and gutter to transition the road from rural to urban. The design phase will finish by the end of 2025—construction will start in 2026 at nearly $6 million.  KRGV
  • Cameron County and the City of Brownsville approved an interlocal agreement to expand Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 3 to fund key infrastructure upgrades and public improvements—Mayor Cowen said the expansion will drive long-term investment, while County Judge Treviño noted enhanced financing will speed up the zone's impact.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • UT Health RGV Cancer Center opened in the heart of the Valley to offer local families state-of-the-art cancer care that removes the need for long travel. The modern facility features six operating rooms, over 50 exam rooms and advanced imaging like CAT scans, PET scans and MRIs — and it has treated over 2,000 patients in its first month.  FOX RGV

  • Southland Conference commissioner Chris Grant said UTRGV’s hot start impressed him and he praised quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger’s performance—he explained details of the FCS playoff format on October 09.  KRGV
