CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Historic San Fernando Building in downtown Brownsville is being transformed into an art museum by city officials and the Clarissa Francis Foundation to revitalize the Market Square area. Officials said the pink building on East Adam Street—built in 1877 and once a furniture store, hotel and salon—is set to undergo renovations costing between $1.5 million and $2.5 million, with work expected to finish in 2026. - ➤ The Port of Brownsville will boost trade and create new jobs with over $20 billion in projects—such as deepening its 17-mile channel for larger vessels by late 2026 and expanding LNG facilities—while the Board, led by Chairman Esteban Guerra, guides the work. Port of Brownsville

- ➤ Brownsville high school students will build and launch rockets under Project Vortex—an aerospace program led by STARSociety that offers training in technical and teamwork skills. - ➤ Pre-K teacher Gloria Moreno and her students at John Doedyns Elementary are collecting mittens and beanies to help children battling cancer, continuing a three-year drive rooted in her personal experience with her daughter's illness. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cameron County Commissioners Court reached an agreement to co-own the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge Company with Mexico—negotiations with Union Pacific Railroad began two years ago and the transaction will close in late 2025 or early 2026. County officials will integrate the new bridge into their existing International Bridge system for unified management. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. ordered the temporary closure of Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4 from FM 1419 to the beach in Cameron County due to SpaceX flight testing and the road will be closed on October 13 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with alternate dates of October 14 or October 15 if needed—SpaceX and law enforcement will enforce the safety zone during these hours. - ➤ Foster Poultry Farms has recalled nearly 4 million pounds of chicken corn dogs due to wood pieces found in the batter — consumers should return any affected products to where they were purchased for a refund.
