COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville announced its 25th Annual Veterans Day Parade – the event is organized in collaboration with the Southmost Veterans Day Parade Committee to honor local heroes on Veterans Day.  City of Brownsville
  • Henry E. McNair Park reopened today with brand-new equipment — including custom-built benches made by city staff — after recent damage, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the park's upgrade.  City of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Seven candidates are running for three seats in a Port Mansfield election as locals decide whether to incorporate the fishing village as a separate city from Willacy County Navigation District. Early voting will take place from Oct. 20 through Oct. 31—residents remain divided over potential double taxation as some reports of sign vandalism have surfaced.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Today, the Brownsville Fire Department hosts its 2nd Annual Fire Fest at Brownsville Sports Park where live demonstrations and fire safety education are offered — the department also received a new $1.2M fire engine from NextDecade.  City of Brownsville
  • The Brownsville animal shelter now charges a $25 fee for surrendering pets, a change approved by city commissioners—designed to help cover food and medical costs. Harlingen Animal Shelter has a similar fee, and some residents worry that the new charge may lead to more stray animals.  KRGV
