BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dr. Mark Kroll said that the Valley will become wealthier when local businesses export products and services that attract buyers from outside—he noted that the RGV Angel Network in Weslaco offers pitch nights and training sessions to help entrepreneurs get seed money for new ventures.  Rio Grande Guardian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Temple Beth Israel in Harlingen held its Rosh Hashanah service last Monday with Rabbi Frank Joseph leading prayers and songs as people celebrated the Jewish New Year—bringing hope and reflection to the community. After the prayers, members gathered to share apples and challah bread to mark the start of the High Holy Days.  MyRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VIDA, a Rio Grande Valley non-profit that has helped over 6,000 people since 1995 with financial aid, job training, and career guidance, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Nurse Christian Bowser at South Texas Health System said the organization gave him support to finish school—helping him complete his nursing degree and pursue a bachelor’s at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Terry Canales honored late Chairman J. Bruce Bugg, Jr. at a ceremony earlier this week at the Texas Department of Transportation Headquarters—he said Bugg advanced key RGV transportation projects such as funding for South Texas International Airport and the Anzalduas International Bridge expansion.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez spoke at the South Texas Alliance of Cities meeting at the Harlingen Arts — Heritage Museum and said border crossings are down 30% while local businesses face labor shortages. He is working on the Safe American Workforce Act that will create a pathway for vetted immigrants to help fill these gaps.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • DHR Health was named a Center of Excellence for lung care screening and lung cancer care by GO2 for Lung Cancer at the Edinburg Conference Center— it is the only hospital south of San Antonio with both awards. Dr. Federico Vallejo said the hospital now uses the Ion-robotic assisted bronchoscopy system to help catch lung cancer early and boost survival rates.  Rio Grande Guardian

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UTRGV Vaqueros played their first Southland Conference game in Louisiana on Saturday and lost to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions with a score of 31—45. The loss marked a tough start for the team in their new conference.  KRGV
