- ➤ The City of Brownsville and the Brownsville Fire Department announced they will host the second annual Fire Fest — a community celebration scheduled for October 4 at Brownsville Sports Park. The event will offer live demonstrations and activities to educate residents about fire safety. City of Brownsville
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brownsville ISD is set to finish a $3.1 million conversion of Sams Memorial Stadium into a football and soccer complex in time for Hanna Early College High School's homecoming game next Thursday—this update includes new turf and facilities for upcoming Division I games. The project has been approved as substantially complete and will allow for a full season of sports matches. MyRGV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cameron County and Starbase signed an interlocal agreement to start dune restoration along a mile-long section of Boca Chica Beach; officials will study the project further and try to secure additional funding in the future. KURV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cameron County Drainage District No. 5 board members met with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in Harlingen on Thursday — while he toured Texas State Technical College — and asked for his support on two grant applications valued at more than $30 million to improve drainage channels and build new detention ponds to reduce flooding. - ➤ A case of New World screwworm was reported in Sabinas Hidalgo (about 70 miles west of Roma) and ranchers worry the parasite could soon threaten local cattle. Congressman Henry Cuellar has asked the USDA to work with Mexican officials to help prevent the spread. KURV
