BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, TAM President Richard A. 'Tony' Bennett spoke at a South Texas Manufacturers Association meeting in Brownsville to stress that boosting research and development through Senate Bill 2206 will raise Texas' R&D tax credit from 5 percent to as much as 10.9 percent—he said such changes are needed to spur new jobs and strengthen advanced manufacturing.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The last day to register to vote is Monday, October 6 for Brownsville residents with Election Day coming on Tuesday, November 4; forms are available at the Office of the City Secretary on the 1st Floor of City Plaza at 1034 E. Levee Street—call 956-548-6042 for help.  City of Brownsville
  • Mayor John Cowen Jr. was picked as chairman of the South Texas Alliance of Cities at a meeting in Harlingen yesterday—mayors from South Texas talked about roads, jobs and keeping people safe.  City of Brownsville
  • Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport will receive an $18 million runway upgrade funded by the FAA through its airport improvement program—this project will enhance safety and reliability as the runway, which does not serve commercial flights, typically lasts about 40 years. Airport director Angel Ramos said the project aims to keep the runway in the best shape possible.  KRGV
  • Gov. Abbott announced $26 million in funding to expand and modernize Weslaco’s Mid-Valley Airport — a plan approved by the Legislature earlier this year. The money will pay for runway expansion, new hangars for law enforcement and emergency response, and drainage improvements to support larger aircraft.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Gov. Greg Abbott announced $26 million to upgrade Weslaco’s Mid-Valley Airport on September 23, with $10 million for runway expansion, $8 million for drainage improvements, and $8 million for emergency facilities—steps designed to support the growing region. He said the upgrades will help the area handle its rapid growth as the Rio Grande Valley is expected to double in population by 2045.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Cameron County and Starbase teamed up to restore sand dunes at Boca Chica Beach and protect public access, and the agreement prevents Starbase from seeking the same funding as the county. Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said Starbase managed improvements within its mile-long limits while working with the county on areas outside — city leaders approved the county’s terms on Sept. 25.  KRGV
