COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville will host CycloBia on Friday, October 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.—residents are invited to join the community bike ride by lacing up their sneakers and hopping on their bikes.  City of Brownsville

BUSINESS NEWS

  • IKEA will open its first Rio Grande Valley store on Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. at Pharr Towne Center, 500 N. Jackson Road—inviting the community for a grand opening with early giveaways and a Swedish food experience.  MyRGV
  • Seatrium sold its shipbuilding facility at the Port of Brownsville to Karpowership on September 23—this deal is expected to boost local jobs and bring new investment to our area. Karpowership will soon establish operations that aim to further grow the port and support local industry.  Port of Brownsville

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southmost Branch Library celebrated its 20th anniversary with a community event that drew dozens of local residents — showing fun, culture, and pride — and marked a key milestone for the library.  City of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville’s Multimodal Transportation Department is launching the TransLoc Rider app — replacing the RideSystems app — to modernize public transit and improve rider convenience.  City of Brownsville
  • Texas will add 17 miles of floating border buoys along the Rio Grande near Brownsville to strengthen border security—Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the buoys have been an effective part of the immigration strategy since first released near Eagle Pass in 2023.  KURV
  • Cameron County mourned the loss of former Treasurer Eduardo 'Eddie' Gonzalez who passed away peacefully last week; county Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. expressed his condolences and remembered his dedicated service from January 1, 1995—December 31, 2006.  Cameron County
  • Gov. Greg Abbott announced that $26 million in state funds have been set aside for the Mid-Valley Airport in Weslaco—$10 million for a runway extension, $8 million for drainage and other improvements, and $8 million for emergency first responder facilities; he said this funding comes as the Rio Grande Valley grows rapidly.  KURV
  • Cameron County communities are updating their Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce risks to life and property from local hazards. Public input will help the planning team review potential threats and choose effective actions—ensuring the measures protect residents.  Cameron County
