  • The new Adventure Course at Camp Rio was unveiled at Historic Camp Lulu Sams during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor John Cowen Jr., Camp Rio leaders + BCIC President and CEO Cori Pena. School leaders also joined, marking the opening of a facility that offers a fresh outdoor adventure for local families.  City of Brownsville
  • Manos y Raices de mi Tierra will mark the 204th anniversary of independence for five Central American countries today at Brownsville Linear Park from 9 a.m. to noon with folkloric dances, regional music and a free parade of flags. Consuls from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala will attend and traditional foods like pupusas and horchata will be available.  Rio Grande Guardian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard are searching for a missing swimmer — a Black man in his 20s who is 6'2 and about 170 pounds — near the beach access at 310 Padre Boulevard off South Padre Island after he was reported missing Friday at 2:30 p.m.; crews are using a boat and a helicopter to search the waters.  KRGV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local smoke shops in the Rio Grande Valley are following the new state rule that bans hemp sales to anyone under 21 under Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order. Texas Toke Smoke Shop (in Weslaco) and Donna’s Feel Rite Dispensary (which checks ages at every sale) said they will comply while health officials warn of possible side effects.  KRGV

  • Crepe Town has moved inside the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art where owner Melissa de la Garza now serves signature sweet and savory crepes—local fans can enjoy the familiar treat in a new cultural setting.  City of Brownsville

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A judge ruled on Sept 10 that the physical ban on PSJA board member Cynthia Gutierrez from district property is lifted—however, after the district filed an appeal, the injunction is stayed and the censure remains enforceable until the appellate court reviews the case; the next hearing is set for Oct 21.  MyRGV
  • College students are warned of scams that target financial aid as FAFSA opens on October 1. Experts say that students should check calls and emails carefully—scammers may try to take advantage of financial pressures.  FOX RGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Palm View Police Department has introduced K9 Jean—an emotional support canine—to help first responders and community members cope with stress. The police say the dog will offer comfort during hard times and assist those who have faced trauma.  FOX RGV
  • Brownsville ISD appointed its first female police chief, Anna Gaucin, on Sept. 11—a ceremony that also honored the legacy of 9/11, and she took charge of 73 police and 53 security officers; Superintendent Jesus Chavez said her 20-year law enforcement and education experience will boost district safety. The move comes as the district builds on its commitment to a secure environment.  MyRGV
