COMMUNITY NEWS

  • BCIC has opened FY2026 Quality of Life Grant applications to support projects that make Brownsville better—nonprofits, agencies and partners can apply with ideas that build on the success of the Soaring Eagle Zipline. Applicants will submit proposals soon to help improve the community.  City of Brownsville

CRIME NEWS

  • Cynthia Banda shared her family’s domestic violence tragedy at a Mission conference hosted by Angels of Love—she recounted how her sister Melissa was killed in 2020 by her ex-husband and urged stricter penalties such as longer jail sentences and ankle monitors to help victims.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville Library System announced that free adult computer literacy classes will be available in September at both branches—residents can sign up to improve their digital skills.  City of Brownsville
  • Brownsville ISD middle school choir students will perform at a state competition later this fall to showcase their singing talents and represent their school. They will join other choirs from across the state as they prepare to compete and share their music with the local community.  KRGV
  • Brownsville ISD re-assigned some teachers after it lost 1,600 students this school year. Superintendent Jesus Chavez said the district made the reassignments because families moved back to Mexico and asked for volunteers while keeping teachers with seniority and multiple certifications at their schools.  KRGV
  • Hidalgo County Head Start Program was awarded the National Head Start Association Program of Excellence Award — the first time in nearly 20 years that a Texas program earned this honor — and the five-year accreditation shows the program meets high standards in education and services for young children and families.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Deputy City Manager Alan Guard has been appointed to the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for a three-year term—announced by the City of Brownsville.  City of Brownsville
  • A new $35,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is helping a local organization to aid homeless veterans in Brownsville by funding job training and Veterans Affairs assistance. STAIVA (South Texas Afghanistan Iraq Veterans Association) supports veterans like Manuel Gunnoe, who faced foreclosure due to medical debt, and reports that 26% of its clients are homeless.  KRGV
  • Dr. Ada Cuellar of Weslaco announced her run for Texas Congressional District 15 during a kickoff event at The House of Bloom. She said she will challenge U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz next year and aims to bring a brighter future for her district.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Driscoll Children's Hospital-RGV will launch the region's first pediatric residency program to train local doctors. The hospital announced the new program and a $1 million Mid-Valley Pediatric Assistance Endowment — with a $500,000 gift from Knapp Community Care Foundation matched by Driscoll — at a press conference in Weslaco.  Rio Grande Guardian
