- ➤ Jury selection for the murder trial of 23-year-old Carlos Julian Contreras—accused of fatally shooting 19-year-old Genero “Izzy” Castillo in a sugar cane field near Donna in 2020—begins today in Edinburg while opening arguments are set for Monday. KURV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cameron County Parks completed the first phase of its toll collection system upgrade on September 4 and will accept credit card payments at Isla Blanca Park, Beach Access No.5 and No.6, and Adolph Thomae, Jr. County Park starting Monday, September 8—upgrades at Andy Bowie Park and Beach Access No.3 are still underway. - ➤ Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. will order Boca Chica Beach and State Hwy 4 to be temporarily closed for SpaceX non-flight testing activities from FM 1419 to the beach either on September 7 from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. C.S.T. or on September 8 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—SpaceX and law enforcement will coordinate checkpoint access for residents with proof of residence. - ➤ The city of Progreso will reopen its search for a police chief after David Hernandez, who was chosen last month, announced Wednesday he cannot accept the job for personal medical reasons—officials said he had not started the role. City leaders said they will hire someone fully available to handle all the duties of the position. KURV
