  • The Brownsville Animal Regulation & Care Center welcomed Dr. Alaina Kuehr as its second veterinarian to help oversee the medical care of pets—she will support the center’s ongoing efforts to provide quality care.  City of Brownsville

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man was bitten by a rattlesnake on Sunday at the Jaime Zapata Boat Ramp near Brownsville after the snake, hidden under a portable toilet, bit his leg and witness Ernesto Garza urged him to seek immediate help—experts from the Gladys Porter Zoo advised people to avoid snakes and call 911 if bitten.  KRGV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Brownsville is facing road closures from renovations at the historic Samano Building, El Jardin Hotel, and a wastewater project, which led to a 60% drop in sales at Aras Pizzeria, said owner Frank Gomez + local business owners report short-term losses. City officials have posted signs+and will update business owners on closure schedules until the projects finish in October for the building work and May for the wastewater upgrade.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating the deaths of Rosalinda, 77, and Joel Garcia, 68, who were found dead in a vehicle in a garage near the intersection of Tenth Street and Rio Rico Road in Mercedes — narcotics were found nearby and an autopsy has been ordered.  KURV
  • A 32-year-old man—Joseph Lee Martinez—was arrested on Friday after allegedly posting threats to kill Brownsville police on social media and was arraigned on Saturday on a terroristic threat charge with a $20,000 bond.  KURV
  • A 32-year-old man, Joseph Lee Martinez, was arrested after allegedly threatening Brownsville police on X and was arraigned with a $20,000 bond after local investigations — the FBI and U.S. Marshals assisted in the case.  KRGV

  • Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr. said his Tío Juan Escobar—recently inducted into the RGV Sports Hall of Fame—is his idol for his work as a war hero, county judge, school board president, and state representative, and he praised his notable genealogy work about the family that founded Escobares.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Free student tickets for the first UTRGV Vaqueros football game sold out in less than an hour Monday morning, with half claimed in three minutes—limited gameday tickets will be sold to the public on Friday at 8 a.m. and students without tickets are encouraged to join the tailgate on Saturday at 2 p.m.  KRGV
