GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials received the Tourism Friendly Texas City designation on August 21 from the Texas Economic Development + Tourism Office, marking an important milestone for Brownsville.  City of Brownsville
  • The City of Brownsville invites residents and stakeholders to share ideas for the new Downtown Renaissance Master Plan—aiming to shape future downtown improvements.  City of Brownsville
  • The Brownsville City Commission met on August 19 to review a full agenda, including key decisions on the city's property tax rate — the meeting set the stage for future adjustments in local taxation.  City of Brownsville
  • TxDOT and local officials announced about $1.8B in funding as part of the 10-year Unified Transportation Program for Cameron County — the plan includes major projects on U.S. 77, SH 4, FM 509, FM 1847, SH 107, U.S. 281, and FM 3248 that will improve traffic flow and public safety. Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. said the coordinated projects will benefit the region by consolidating efforts through a merged MPO.  Cameron County
  • On Wednesday, The White House announced that Cameron County was granted a Presidential permit to build a pedestrian bridge at the Gateway International Bridge connecting Brownsville with Matamoros. Officials said the environmental review will start in September and the new bridge will speed travel while the current bridge is reserved for asylum seekers — a nearby duty-free store will be removed as part of the project — according to Judge Eddie Treviño.  KRGV
  • A new Texas law will require the 10 Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms by September 1 and is already facing legal challenges from districts outside the valley — no district in our area has joined the suit. Local residents remain divided, with some saying the measure offers a needed moral guide and others arguing it imposes a particular faith.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Valley Baptist Medical Center's Child to Adult Abuse Response Team in Harlingen began in 2006 and now treats over 100 patients each month, having helped nearly 22,000 cases including more than 13,600 children. The program nears its 20-year mark—continuing to support victims as local officials plan a new countywide Adult Sexual Assault Response Team.  MyRGV
