  • A fundraiser has been launched to support the Mendoza family after their seven-week-old daughter, Alondra, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at Texas Children’s Hospital. McAllen’s La Mexicana Restaurante is hosting the drive throughout the week — encouraging patrons to help by mentioning Alondra’s name when ordering.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted nine packages of cocaine weighing 22 pounds at Los Indios International Bridge on Monday — the drugs, valued at more than $297,000, are under investigation by Homeland Security.  FOX RGV
  • Jose Luis Villalobos awaits the jury’s verdict tomorrow on charges of killing his stepson, 18 year old Arturo Salceda and injuring his wife, Lydia Zamorano in a shooting on July 22, 2023—defense asserts no gunpowder residue was found and claims she fired the weapon amid a history of abuse.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Workforce Commission announced Wednesday that just over a million dollars in grants have been awarded to Edinburg, Roma, South Texas and Weslaco school systems plus Texas Southmost College to support training in high-demand careers. The grants are part of the Jobs and Education for Texans program that prepares students for work in healthcare and welding.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cameron County will close State Highway Four between FM 1419 and Boca Chica Beach for a potential Starship launch that may happen Sunday. The road will be closed from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday — with the launch window expected to open at 6:30 p.m. and alternative closures planned for Monday and Tuesday.  KURV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA warned consumers to discard Walmart’s Great Value frozen shrimp after cesium traces were detected in a shipment from Indonesia. Walmart is working with the FDA to remove the product from shelves in Texas—no cases of contamination have been reported.  FOX RGV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The historic Samano Building at 1158 E. Elizabeth St. in downtown Brownsville is nearly restored by a non-profit to add 40 affordable housing units and a grocery store with fresh food—crews are finishing electric lines and other updates so the project will be complete by October.  KRGV
