- ➤ Lyford Fire Department is spraying an oil spill on Business 77 and FM 1018—while the Willacy County Sheriff's Office controls traffic and asks drivers to slow down for safety. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brownsville ISD voters will choose between a $385 million plan to upgrade schools and a $75 million plan to build a new performing arts center on Nov. 4, 2025, which may raise property taxes from 24 to 28 cents over five years. Superintendent Jesus Chavez said the teachers union hopes both proposals pass—ensuring needed campus improvements. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. has ordered Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4 from FM 1419 to the beach entrance to be closed on August 24—from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.—with alternate dates on August 25 or 26 for SpaceX flight testing to protect public safety. SpaceX and law enforcement will enforce a safety zone that allows residents with proof of local address to access their homes. Cameron County
- ➤ Edinburg police will soon launch a Drone as a First Responder program using funds from the U.S. Treasury’s Asset Forfeiture Program. The drones—equipped with high-definition cameras and thermal night vision—will help answer emergency calls for crashes, criminal activity and search and rescue operations in the Rio Grande Valley.
