CRIME NEWS

  • Abby’s Bakery owners in Los Fresnos were found guilty of harboring undocumented workers and now face up to 10 years in prison—sentencing is set for November 18 with their legal team planning to appeal the verdict.  FOX RGV
  • Jose Roberto Aguilar was sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexual assault after a four-day trial and plea deal— his habitual offender status led to the severe sentence.  FOX RGV
  • The owners of a Los Fresnos bakery, Leonardo Baez-Lara and Nora Avila-Guel, were found guilty of employing illegal immigrants at Abby’s Bakery—sentencing is set for November 18th and they may face up to ten years in prison along with losing legal residency.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • IDEA Robindale in Brownsville has its first graduating senior class—six years after the school opened. Principal Jessica Hinojosa said the school will add a senior wall with pictures and college stickers to mark the milestone as students get ready for college.  KRGV
  • IDEA Public Schools in Brownsville are upgrading safety measures as they welcome 798 students today with a new partnership with Brownsville Police - students are now required to use clear backpacks and store cell phones during class. The schools are also providing emergency response training and installing new phones in every classroom - steps that help secure the campus.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cameron County Commissioners Court will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed 2025-2026 fiscal year budget, with sessions on Tuesday, August 26 at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday, September 2 at 1100 E. Monroe St. in Brownsville (the budget raises property tax revenue by $10,653,398, including $2,730,583 from new property).  Cameron County
  • TXDOT is preparing Valley highways for potential heavy rain and flooding, and crews are clearing debris from inlets while trailers are loaded with sandbags and signs — contractors check that construction sites remain secure as weather teams monitor a tropical wave from the Gulf.  KRGV
  • Travelers must follow updated US Customs guidelines when carrying prescription medication across the border to avoid fines or jail time—CBP allows up to 90 doses of non-controlled drugs and 50 doses of controlled drugs if they are in the original container with a valid prescription. It is important to have the proper documents and follow these rules exactly.  FOX RGV
