  • On September 18, Brownsville will host the first annual Paws Forward RGV Animal Care Summit where animal care professionals+advocates and community members gather to share ideas on animal care in the region.  City of Brownsville
  • The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center is at full capacity—dozens of dogs await homes as the shelter urgently seeks immediate adoptions from local residents.  City of Brownsville
  • Today, Cori Peña, president and CEO of Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation, introduced the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan that outlines how the group will improve public spaces, boost small business growth, and revitalize downtown. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rising summer heat in the Rio Grande Valley puts drivers at risk of tire blowouts, local tire experts say and advise regular pressure checks. Drivers are urged to monitor tire condition—such checks could help prevent dangerous roadside emergencies.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville is currently holding the trial of Leonardo Baez and Nora Alicia Avila-Guel—owners of Abby’s Bakery—who are accused of employing and harboring illegal immigrants living in a room attached to the bakery, and the trial will continue today.  KURV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Diane Milliken Garza invited the Texas Commission on the Arts to visit Brownsville on August 26th and 27th to inspect the historic downtown and advance plans to designate the city as a Cultural District—an effort expected to boost tourism and attract state arts funding—while emphasizing Brownsville's rich history.  Rio Grande Guardian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Brownsville residents will get a new recycling bin for metal, plastic, white paper and cardboard as city officials sign a contract with Redfish Recycling to launch citywide curbside recycling. The city will start an education campaign on Oct. 1 (this year) and begin full service on Jan. 1, 2026 with a small fee added to utility bills.  MyRGV

  • The Cameron County Bail Bond Board will meet tomorrow—August 14 at 1:30 p.m.—in the courtroom at the Cameron County Courthouse on the 2nd Floor of the Oscar C. Dancy Building to review July reports, approve minutes, and consider new employee licenses with public comments allowed.  Cameron County

  • As summer heat continues, a Rio Grande Valley beekeeper warns residents to be cautious of wasp nests that can cause multiple stings—he advises having professionals remove them to protect those with allergies.  KRGV
  • Brownsville neurosurgeon and inventor Dr. Madhavan A. Pisharodi was featured in the Indian magazine Dhanam for his 60 patents and inventions including spinal implants and solar panels—he builds every prototype on his own without support from labs or funding.
