COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Palm Valley Animal Shelter says nearly 500 dogs need homes after taking in more than 50 dogs from an Edinburg hoarding case and closing its Trenton location—this overcrowding has led the shelter to offer free adoptions with a $25 fee only if the pet is not yet spayed or neutered. Approved adopters can take their new pets home the same day as the easy five to ten minute application process.  FOX RGV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Los Fresnos Fire Department responded to a fire on Saturday that burned 20 acres of railroad ties near FM 2480 and San Roman Road and briefly closed parts of the roads—no homes or businesses were affected.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cameron County announced that improvements will be made at Beach Access No. 3 with $4.4 million donated by SpaceX. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Monday at 28495 State Park Road 100-North—north of Andy Bowie Park, and construction will finish early to mid-summer so the access will be closed until then.  KRGV
  • The former Cameron County jail was renamed the Alex Perez Detention Center to honor former sheriff Alex Perez—elected as Justice of the Peace in 1977 and sheriff in 1985—during a ceremony on Saturday attended by his family and friends.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UT RGV Vaqueros started training in Edinburg to get ready for the season by working on both offense and defense—NFL preseason games have shown strong efforts despite some injuries. MLB will make history when Jen Powell becomes the first woman to ump a regular season game—she is set to work a Saturday matchup between the Braves and Marlins.  FOX RGV
