  • Three college students interned at the Port of Brownsville this summer—gaining hands-on experience in maritime operations, finance, and cargo services—to prepare for their future careers. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville and its IT Department — in partnership with Dell Technologies — recently hosted the Smart City: Back to School Digital Skills Workshop and Laptop Giveaway at the Brownsville Event Center. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brownsville Metro is checking new route ideas to help riders and improve service while inviting community input at two public meetings. Local residents can share feedback to shape the final plan before any changes are made.  City of Brownsville
  • The county budget office updates property tax rate details online as new data is received — deputy county administrator Xavier Villarreal oversees the updates.  Cameron County
  • The City of Brownsville has partnered with Freese and Nichols, Inc.—to launch a master plan to revitalize the historic downtown into a hub for arts, culture, tourism and commerce. Residents can join public meetings and surveys, while the draft plan will be ready by May and final adoption is expected by June.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • County officials have issued a corrected 2026 Notice of Proposed Increase in Compensation that outlines future pay adjustments for county employees and will be reviewed by County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. and commissioners Sofia C. Benavides, Joey Lopez, David A. Garza, and Gus Ruiz+ the notice will be examined further+ at upcoming Commissioners Court meetings.  Cameron County
  • Road work is underway on East Washington Street between E. 9th and E. 14th as a mill and overlay project began Sunday night at 8:00 p.m.  City of Brownsville

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • At a community meeting on Aug. 1, local real estate broker Larry Jokl highlighted a planned $500 million Renaissance Park that will create a riverwalk-style area downtown—managed by a TIRZ board in a city-county partnership. The project will remove an area between St. Francis and the old bridge and is expected to drive new development for property owners in the coming years.  Rio Grande Guardian
