- ➤ Clear the Shelters campaign is underway as local shelters in our area accept donations from August 1 through September 15 — the program has helped over 1 million pets find forever homes and will support Greater Good Charities with each contribution. ValleyCentral
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three Chinese nationals were arrested in Mission early this morning in a smuggling attempt by law enforcement agencies — including the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Military Department and the U.S. Border Patrol — while an Uber driver was cleared of involvement. FOX RGV
- ➤ U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley arrested alleged human smugglers, seized over 186 pounds of drugs worth $3.4 million, and rescued a 4-year-old girl (she is now at a local hospital) (border security efforts remain active). FOX RGV
- ➤ Two men pleaded guilty to murdering 16-year-old Fernando Martinez at an apartment complex in Santa Rosa after police said he was targeted for selling drugs—sentencing will occur later this month. KURV
- ➤ Jose Sosa was arrested earlier this week at the Progreso bridge for allegedly stealing rental cars worth over $500,000—he now faces up to five years in prison. KURV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The state will hold a tax-free weekend on school supplies starting Friday, August 8 and running through Sunday, August 10—shoppers can buy school supplies, clothes and most shoes under 100 dollars while computers, computer bags, software, textbooks, framed backpacks and athletic bags are not eligible. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. ordered Boca Chica Beach and the stretch of State Highway 4 from FM 1419 to the beach entrance to be closed yesterday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to protect public health during SpaceX non-flight testing activities — law enforcement and SpaceX set up checkpoints that allowed residents with proof of residence to reach their homes.
