ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities recovered the second body from a shrimp boat that capsized near Jaime Zapata boat ramp in Brownsville on Monday + the Brownsville Fire Department said its team of divers and drones helped in the recovery and offered condolences to the family.  FOX RGV

  • RGV-based Supply Pay—led by William Steele—secured access to another $100 million from lending partners to help its customers get paid sooner and reduce financial burdens. The company serves trade businesses in McAllen, Pharr, Brownsville and other border areas and will use the funds during the peak season.  Rio Grande Guardian

CRIME NEWS

  • Harlingen police are asking the public for help with the unsolved murder of Naomi Rodriguez, who left her McDonald’s job on July 16, 2016 and was found in Rio Hondo on April 11, 2017—tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (956) 425-8477.  FOX RGV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville and the Mitte Cultural District have signed a 40-year lease and operation agreement to transform the old BMFA building into The Mitte: Arts and Cultural Center — a new hub for art and community activities.  City of Brownsville

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTRGV School of Medicine has formed a search committee to find its first endowed chair in orthopedic surgery—established with a generous donation by Drs. Subram G. and Elizabeth G. Krishnan—to help address a shortage of specialized care in underserved communities. Interim dean Dr. Everardo Cobos said the new chair will support recruiting top surgeons, innovative training, and research in musculoskeletal treatments.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Brownsville ISD will change its elementary extended day schedule to run three days a week—Tuesday through Thursday until 5:30 p.m.—beginning August 19 due to federal budget cuts.  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • John Beckham, managing director of NADBank, said the Rio Grande is in crisis as less than 20% of its water reaches the gulf and drought pushed two counties into an emergency in 2024. NADBank is launching technical assistance awards and finalizing a $400 million Water Resiliency Fund for the Rio Grande Valley+ asking the public to help shape lasting water solutions.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Border Patrol agent Eric Cespedes drowned at South Padre Island on July 11 while trying to save his children, and his funeral services have been announced. Visitation will take place tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, the mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Lord of Divine Mercy Parish—interment follows at 11 a.m. at Buena Vista Burial Park.  ValleyCentral
  • Congressman Vicente Gonzalez and other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus sent a letter to the U.S. Navy asking for details on the death of Seaman Angelina Petra Resendiz. A Navy memo stated that Resendiz was last seen on liberty on May 29, was marked as an Unauthorized Absence on May 30, and NCIS began investigating on May 31 while suspect Jermiah Copeland remains in custody.  ValleyCentral
