  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized packages containing 66.35 pounds of alleged cocaine valued at $886,023 at the Hidalgo Port of Entry on Jul 16th — a 44-year-old man driving a 2016 Dodge Charger was arrested during a secondary inspection as federal agents launched a criminal investigation.  ValleyCentral
  • A motion hearing was held in Brownsville for two accused of smuggling cash for a cartel after federal agents discovered $184,095 hidden in a vehicle during May surveillance—both are scheduled for re-arraignment next week with final pretrial hearings set for July 29.  ValleyCentral
  • U.S. Marshals arrested 23 year old Steve Salgado Jimenez—who is from Brownsville—yesterday after he allegedly threatened three police officers on social media following a visit to his home during an ongoing investigation.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Brownsville Independent School District is asking students and parents for input on how to enforce a new cell phone ban law—updated guidelines under HB1481 will remove personal devices from classrooms starting August 13. A feedback form available until July 21 lets the community choose among a complete ban, requiring devices to be stored, or applying different rules by grade.  ValleyCentral
  • Brownsville ISD is asking for public feedback on how to enforce Texas House Bill 1481 that bans cellphones, smartwatches, and tablets in schools—district leaders may choose to ban devices completely or require they be stored away during class—and the survey is open until Monday, July 21.  KRGV

  • At its July 15 meeting, the Brownsville City Commission recognized exemplary service in municipal technology + discussed boosting tourism and economic development to support the city’s growth. Officials said these measures will guide future efforts.  City of Brownsville
