ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A boat capsized near an LNG gas plant on Saturday, prompting a search by the Coast Guard, Brownsville Fire Department divers, and a helicopter that rescued one person but ended at 7:26 p.m. without finding another man—local officials said further investigation is underway.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville Police Department warns residents that scammers posing as officers are calling to demand money+hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call and never share personal or financial information.  FOX RGV
  • A driver in a Jeep Cherokee was arrested at the Veterans International Bridge after officials found boxes of 12,000 counterfeit vehicle registration stickers and 12 freon canisters during an inspection over the weekend—items that were turned over to the Brownsville Police Department.  KSAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 89th Texas Legislature passed House Bill 2, which will provide $8.5 billion in funding for public education and nearly $4 billion for teacher pay raises statewide. Several districts in the Rio Grande Valley, including Brownsville ISD with a starting pay of $56,000, have approved their 2025-2026 compensation plans — more details will be updated as additional districts submit their plans.  ValleyCentral

  • The City of Brownsville will support a Walk — Roll event at Linear Park on July 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event celebrates the 35th Anniversary of the ADA — a key milestone in disability rights.  City of Brownsville
  • Police across the Rio Grande Valley increased patrols yesterday as part of Operation Slow Down to enforce the Move Over Law that requires drivers to change lanes or reduce their speed by at least 20 mph. The campaign, which will run through Aug. 3, warns that violators may face penalties starting at $200 + aims to save lives along busy roadways.  ValleyCentral
  • South Texas Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz proposed changes to the temporary farm worker visa program when she introduced her Bracero Program 2.0 legislation yesterday—she said the bill would streamline the application process, raise wages, and pilot a system for workers to change jobs within the state. The proposal aims to ease workforce shortages in the region.  KURV
  • The City of Brownsville terminated its contract with McAllen-based SAMES, Inc.—the firm in charge of building the Cannery Public Market—on Tuesday due to constant delays and construction defects. City Commissioners said the city is working with its bonding company to complete the project and may take legal action if needed.  ValleyCentral
