CRIME NEWS

  • A Harlingen man was arrested Friday after police found cocaine and crack cocaine at a home on E. Cleveland Avenue; Raul Flores is charged with manufacture and delivery and his bond is $50,000—police recovered over 80 grams of cocaine, 41.5 grams of crack cocaine (and a .45 caliber handgun) from the scene.  KRGV
  • CBP officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry seized a 2006 Jeep Cherokee with 12,000 allegedly counterfeit Texas vehicle registration stickers & 12 canisters of freon on Saturday at the Veterans International Bridge and Brownsville PD arrested the driver to begin a criminal investigation.  ValleyCentral
  • The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 46-year-old man on Sunday near Santa Rosa ISD Warrior Stadium after reports said he fired his gun at the ground—authorities identified him as Adrian Vasquez Reyes and charged him with deadly conduct with a firearm—no injuries or property damage were reported.  ValleyCentral

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville and its IT Department will host the Smart City: Back to School Digital Skills Workshop and Laptop Giveaway at the Brownsville Event Center on Aug. 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.—students who live in the city, attend local schools and show financial need must apply by July 21 to participate and receive free laptops, tech training and additional supplies from Dell and NTT.  ValleyCentral

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report found the Rio Grande Valley lacks enough registered nurses and the shortage will grow over the next decade. State officials and local nursing programs are adding training and apprenticeship programs — many local LVNs are pursuing further education for better pay to help keep them in our community.  ValleyCentral
