- ➤ The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a shrimp vessel that capsized near the LNG facility at the Port of Brownsville Saturday around 7 a.m.—one person was rescued while another remains missing as a helicopter and other units continue the search and keep the shipping channel closed. KRGV
- ➤ Border Patrol agent Eric Cespedes drowned at South Padre Island when he jumped into a rip current to save his children—his brave act leaves his family and local colleagues mourning his loss. FOX RGV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On July 10, CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge found 311 packages of meth hidden in a tractor hauling carrots with a total weight of about 1,706 pounds and an estimated street value over $15 million—Homeland Security Investigations is now looking into the case. ValleyCentral
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers in McAllen are asking for a 90-day extension on the tomato suspension agreement to delay a 17% tariff on imported tomatoes that could hurt 50,000 jobs and an $8 billion trade benefit. The Department of Commerce will decide by Monday—if not extended, rising prices may soon affect the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. FOX RGV
- ➤ On Friday, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, Representative Ryan Guillen and a produce leader met in McAllen to urge the Commerce Department to delay a planned 20.91% duty on imported Mexican tomatoes—prices that will rise starting Monday.
