ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent named Eric Cespedes drowned at South Padre Island yesterday after he tried to save his daughter caught in a strong rip current; bystanders rescued her and officials said a memorial service will be announced soon.  ValleyCentral

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville police warned residents on July 11 of scam calls where individuals falsely claimed to be Brownsville PD (the department does not request payment for citations, warrants, or fines) and advised anyone receiving such calls to hang up and report them (to police).  ValleyCentral

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cameron County commissioners approved a beachfront construction certificate and dune protection permit for a new SpaceX air separator facility in Starbase that will produce liquid oxygen for rockets. Environmental groups voiced concerns over the project’s impact on undeveloped dunes and vegetation, and Starbase still must issue a building permit.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cameron County Bail Bond Board will meet on July 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the Courtroom of the Cameron County Courthouse—located on the 2nd Floor of the Oscar C. Dancy Building—to review monthly reports and discuss proposals such as a new fee for replacement of bail bondsmen licenses and various licensing actions.  Cameron County
  • Twenty-one Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies graduated on Thursday after completing a special course aimed at teaching them ways to handle tense situations and reduce injuries (each deputy received a certificate and a pin).  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville’s Department of Health, Wellness, and Animal Services launched a new mobile app today – it sends alerts and updates on mosquito control to help protect residents from health risks.  City of Brownsville
