COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The popular Edinburg band Grupo Frontera donated $70,000 to the Diocese of Brownsville Immigration Services to help reduce fees for foreign nationals seeking permanent residency— a check presentation was held Wednesday at the Mexican consulate in McAllen— and the donation will allow the office to offer more fee waivers.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Monday at the Hidalgo International Bridge when customs officers found twenty parrots in a bag in her vehicle + the birds were taken to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville.  KURV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gladys Porter Zoo held a ribbon cutting for its new Soaring Eagle Zipline that sends riders over 120 feet and opens today. The ride costs $8, allows two riders at a time — it is the first project in the zoo's 10-year expansion plan.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Commercial shrimp season will reopen July 15 after a mid-May closure so local fishermen can let the shrimp grow—fishermen face long days at sea with fewer crew members while a pastor blessed the boats and Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller urged residents to support wild caught Gulf shrimp over imported options.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville students took part in a maritime camp hosted by Texas Southmost College, Texas A&M University and the Port of Brownsville — they toured port offices, training centers and a construction site to learn about careers in maritime, logistics and port operations.  KRGV
  • IDEA Public Schools will host three back-to-school backpack giveaways on July 12 at the San Juan campus, July 19 at La Joya, and July 26 at Sports Park in Brownsville—providing a backpack filled with essential supplies to the first 500 students arriving with a guardian. Local businesses will also offer services—and parents can register their children for the upcoming school year.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Brownsville is seeking a new construction partner to finish the Brownsville Cannery Public Market after McAllen-based SAMES Incorporated failed to address interior delays. Ground broke in 2022 and although the building's exterior is complete, officials ended the contract & are now looking for a firm to resume construction.  KURV
