ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bucket lift hauled by a van caused a large traffic jam near Sunrise Mall early Monday when the driver lost control and had a minor collision with a semi-truck—Brownsville firefighters said there are no injuries and the jam should clear in about 30 minutes.  ValleyCentral
  • A pedestrian was killed Sunday evening in a crash on Commerce Street between Buchanan and Fillmore in Harlingen and authorities say the cause remains unknown.  KURV

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville police are investigating a burglary at Sunrise Mall after an unknown man broke in early on July 5 at 2:49 a.m. and shattered windows at Pandora Jewelry and another kiosk to steal jewelry—no arrests have been made.  ValleyCentral

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brownsville families will enjoy the Jurassic RGV Dinosaur Show — a one-day prehistoric adventure at the Brownsville Public Library this July.  City of Brownsville

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville ISD and other school districts are partnering to support Kerr County in the wake of floods—gift cards from Walmart, Amazon, HEB, Lowe’s, Home Depot, or Visa will help families buy food, repair supplies, and household items. Gift cards can be dropped off at the BISD Administration Building at 1900 E. Price Rd, Ste. 101 from Monday, July 7 to Wednesday, July 9 between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.  ValleyCentral

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Padre Island City Council Member Kerry Schwartz urged the council to create an Eco Center District to boost ecotourism—he pointed to local attractions like the World Birding Center and Sea Turtle Rescue. He said the new district would help address environmental hazards from nearby developments—such as LNG export terminals and SpaceX projects.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr requested a meeting with chapel officials—including Executive Board President Gerald Geletzke and attorney Chris Boswell—as well as County Administration and the Legal Division to review the Chapel by the Sea lease and discuss options for future operations and County responsibilities.  Cameron County
