A South Padre Island resident who survived a shark attack one year ago updated his recovery progress, noting that his strength is returning steadily and local medical teams have supported him—his remarks emphasize ongoing efforts to regain full health.

Jimena Chacon, the 24-year-old founder of Oro Verde Matcha Bar, spoke at the 1 Million Cups event on June 26 about how her matcha pop-up at Farmers Market drew 100 people one morning and led her to quit her job.

She said her communication degree helped her build a unique brand and she plans to use a painted 16-foot trailer to bring her matcha to more spots in Brownsville — a move that aims to meet rising demand.

On July 2 in Cameron Park, deputies answered a 911 call at a home on Florencia Avenue where they found 26-year-old Rolando Arturo Vizcarra dead and two others injured, and Juan Ivan Jimenez, 30, later confessed to the stabbing—he is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while investigators say the motive is drug related.

Mayor John Cowen announced on Facebook that a Brownsville crew was deployed Friday to the Texas Hill Country to help with rescue and recovery efforts after devastating floods.

The team (three people, one ambulance, and a strike team leader) was sent to support ongoing relief as heavy rains and flood warnings continued.
