  • Brownsville has upgraded Gonzalez Park in the Southmost area with new restrooms and a pavilion built at a cost of $450,000 — the project was finished in four weeks and came in $100,000 under budget. Noble Texas Builders CEO Rene Capistran, who grew up playing there, urged local youth to help protect the park following recent vandalism.  Rio Grande Guardian

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies arrived at Mission Regional Medical Center around 3:48 p.m. on Saturday — they confirmed a 3-month-old child was found unresponsive in a locked vehicle in rural Mission and later died, with the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office investigating the case.  MyRGV
  • Navy sailor Angelina Sandy was given full military honors at a solemn funeral in Brownsville—she was last seen on May 29th, her body was found on June 9th, and fellow sailor Jeremiah Copeland is in pretrial confinement as authorities continue investigating her death.  FOX RGV
  • Today, U.S. Navy Sailor Angelina Resendiz was laid to rest in Brownsville with military honors after her body was found earlier this month near her base in Virginia, and traffic slowed briefly as her hearse passed the city. Her mother, Esmeralda Castle, said restoring safety is needed for justice — a call for action as a suspect is in custody in connection with the case — and stressed the need for real change to better protect service members.  ValleyCentral
  • Local authorities responded to a call at the Learning Club Preschool—where a four-year-old child was found unresponsive in a daycare van and pronounced dead while the cause of death remains under investigation.  FOX RGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Depression 2 is over the Bay of Campeche with winds of 30 mph and moving northwest at 7 mph— it is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Barry by this afternoon. The storm’s forecast track shows it will stay well away from our area with a landfall expected after midnight and a push of tropical moisture increasing rain chances through Tuesday.  ValleyCentral
