  • Brownsville Police arrested 24-year-old Mauricio Salazar (in Pharr) after new evidence linked him to the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Gerardo Gonzalez Jr. at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home parking lot on February 2nd at 2 a.m. and he now faces first degree murder charges.  ValleyCentral
  • Brownsville Police are searching for those who have repeatedly vandalized Tony Gonzalez Park and other city parks — anyone with relevant information is urged to call 956-548-7000.  KRGV

  • In observance of World Giraffe Day, Gladys Porter Zoo is teaming with local author Suzanne Shepard on a children’s book series that spotlights Rocket, a giraffe who recently gave birth. The new book, Love, Laugh & Hug a Giraffe, will be available on Amazon & in the zoo gift shop beginning July 16 with proceeds benefiting animal care at the zoo.  ValleyCentral

  • Puerto de Brownsville received the 19th Premio al Mérito Exportador 'Rodolfo Garza' from COMCE Noreste on June 17th in Monterrey, Mexico to honor its role in strengthening export ties with Mexico+ the port moved 28 million tons of cargo in 2024 and is set to attract new investments that will boost trade and create jobs.  Port of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local civil rights groups joined a lawsuit challenging the repeal of the Texas Dream Act that provided in-state tuition for undocumented students—Texas AG Ken Paxton had declined to defend the law, prompting groups like the Texas Civil Rights Project, the ACLU of Texas, Democracy Forward and the National Immigration Law Center to file a motion on Tuesday night to defend its constitutionality.  KURV
  • Today, the County of Cameron will submit a request to the Texas Department of Agriculture for funds to install new water and sewer lines in Colonia Saldivar-Central Estates—work that will benefit 197 residents and connect 41 households while replacing failing septic systems. The county certified that the project has no significant environmental impact and will accept written public comments until July 15.  Cameron County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Q7 Sports announced its International Summer Soccer Cup will be held in Brownsville from July 10-13, and the event is expected to boost local tourism and hotel business - area sales manager Charlie Abrego said the tournament could bring added weekend sales to nearby hotels. The tournament will give kids a chance to compete with international teams and help showcase the city as a tourist destination.  Rio Grande Guardian
