  • Authorities confirmed that a body recovered in Norfolk, Virginia is that of missing Brownsville sailor Angelina Resendiz—the remains were discovered in a wooded area and a Navy sailor is now in pretrial confinement pending charges as NCIS continues its investigation while her family awaits DNA identification.  KRGV
  • A 46-year-old Mission man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after causing a three-vehicle crash by driving under the influence that killed his neighbor’s fiancé—he pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter while charges for injuring two others were dropped.  MyRGV
  • Four fishermen from Matamoros pleaded guilty to illegally fishing for red snapper near South Padre Island—federal officials said they were arrested on April 16 on a 25-foot boat carrying 693 pounds of red snapper and four sharks valued at $9,000, using a four-mile longline with 1,200 hooks and a history of prior illegal fishing.  MyRGV
  • A man was arrested in Pharr on federal drug trafficking charges after investigators said he helped smuggle nearly 6,000 pounds of cocaine from South Texas to other parts of the country and he appeared in McAllen federal court Monday.  KURV

  • The Gladys Porter Zoo Discovery Education Center will hold Safari Summer Camp for kids in pre-k to fifth grade with games, story time, zoo tours, and animal encounters running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June to early August—parents must register in person as fees apply with discounts for zoo members.  ValleyCentral

FINANCE NEWS

  • The IRS announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties impacted by flooding that began on March 26. Affected taxpayers have until Nov. 3 to file returns & pay taxes, with the relief covering quarterly payroll returns & additional IRA and health savings account contributions.  KRGV

  • State Representative Erin Gamez announced her re-election for Texas House District 38 on Tuesday and said she passed legislation that benefits Cameron County.   • The City of Brownsville is now accepting applications for summer internships and volunteer opportunities in departments such as Animal Regulation and Care, Public Library, Communications and Marketing, Engineering and Public Works, Emergency Management, Parks and Recreation, and Health, Wellness and Animal Services — applicants must be at least 16, live in Texas for 90 days, and provide a valid photo ID, with internships lasting from one to six months.  ValleyCentral
