CRIME NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash involving a former Primera commissioner after a red Chevy Camaro hit a police unit at the Carver + Wilson roads intersection early Saturday morning and the car was later stopped, leading to the arrest of Asael Saavedra who was charged with driving while intoxicated.  KURV
  • A Brownsville mother is seeking help after her 21-year-old Navy culinary specialist daughter disappeared from her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29 (Virginia State Police issued a critical missing adult alert) while NCIS investigates the case.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Legislature passed bills that will ease college costs for students in high-demand fields—Senate Bill 646 supports mental health students, House Bill 1105 helps paramedic trainees, and additional measures assist those planning military enlistment.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Runoff elections held last weekend in several Rio Grande Valley cities produced unofficial results until canvassing is complete; in Brownsville, Nurith Galonsky Pizana + Pedro Cardenas were elected as city commissioners. In Sullivan City, Sylvia Castillo won the mayoral race while Isaac Villalon Sulema + Rene Pena secured city council seats, and in San Juan and Primera, Gilbert Garza and Luis Casas were chosen for city commission and mayor, respectively.  KURV
  • The City of Brownsville’s Engineering and Public Works Department will temporarily close a section of East 12th Street for essential infrastructure updates—coordinated with the Public Utilities Board.  City of Brownsville
  • Governor Greg Abbott said Friday he plans to sign a bill to cut property taxes that will appear on the November ballot— the measure increases school district homestead exemptions and gives extra breaks to seniors, people with disabilities and business owners by reducing taxes on inventory. The tax cuts will total $51 billion over the next two years.  KURV
  • Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick visited the Valley on Monday near the airport to highlight the legislature’s work on a THC ban, more education funding, and an expanded homestead exemption for voters this November—he joined State Senator Adam Hinojosa during the event. He said lawmakers are focused on strengthening border security and warned that businesses hiring undocumented workers may face future penalties.  ValleyCentral

HEALTH NEWS

  • STHS Children’s hosted its Safe Summer Expo on June 7 at its main parking lot to share essential tips for keeping children safe during summer. Nearly 20 groups (including local law enforcement and safety organizations) joined to offer advice on water safety, sun protection, and preventing playground injuries for parents and caregivers.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • South Texas Health System has issued advice to help residents avoid heat-related illness as high temperatures and humidity affect the Rio Grande Valley through August. The guidance recommends staying cool, avoiding outdoor activities between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m., staying hydrated, and checking on elderly and young neighbors.  Rio Grande Guardian
