- ➤ During an April welfare check prompted by a call that two children were left alone, Brownsville police fed a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old—officers later recognized after arresting Maria Isabel Platas for abandoning her children while ensuring they had food until their grandmother arrived. KRGV
- ➤ A former Primera commissioner Asael Saavedra was arrested on a DWI charge after his red Chevrolet Camaro struck a police unit at the intersection of Carver Road and Wilson Road on Saturday at around 2 a.m.—Saavedra fled the scene before he was located and the Texas Department of Public Safety will investigate the hit-and-run. - ➤ Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities RGV (the Diocese branch serving low-income communities) will speak at the Bread for the World Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. from June 9-11 to urge Congress to help combat food insecurity amid a proposed $300 billion cut to SNAP, saying many in the valley are struggling with rising costs. - ➤ Brownsville voters elected Nurith Galonsky Pizana in the At-Large 'B' contest—defeating Roy De los Santos—and re-elected Pedro Cardenas after he beat Daisy Zamora in the District 4 race. City of Brownsville
- ➤ Ranchers in South Texas have warned that a screwworm fly from southern Mexico is moving north and may infect animals with open wounds, especially affecting vulnerable calves. Legislation proposed Friday called on the USDA to start a sterile screwworm lab—ranchers say the threat could cost billions in losses if it spreads further. KRGV

- ➤ Construction has begun at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville as crews remove the 75-year-old track to build a modern football and soccer complex.
