COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ricardo Alvarez hides $50 cash envelopes across the Valley, sparking a scavenger hunt as 11,000 followers vote for new drop spots on his Find The Cash 956 Facebook page. He started this project in September to help neighbors and spends about $400 monthly (using personal funds).  KRGV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brownsville Public Library Southmost Branch will host the Dinosaur George Traveling Museum on June 3 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on June 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — visitors will see prehistoric fossils and skeletons.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cynthia Sakulenzki from the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce said an event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 10-11 a.m. at The Embassy Suites Hotel (800 Convention Center Blvd) in McAllen to update on RGV Desal's future water project boosting regional water security and economic growth.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • IDEA Public Schools is upgrading five nearly 10-year-old campuses in Brownsville, McAllen, Weslaco, North Mission and Pharr with a 151 million dollars bond investment. The enhancements, which include new classrooms, gyms and playfields and will finish by August 2027, do not require moving students or staff during construction.  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rising rains and water levels have led to more wild alligator sightings in Valley neighborhoods, and wildlife experts advise residents to keep a safe distance and not feed the animals. Residents may report sightings (512-389-4848) if needed.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Padre Island officials urge community support as proposed cuts to Coastal Zone Management grants may risk funding for dune protection and ADA beach access ramps & parking. They shared an online form for community comments to help keep vital coastal improvements intact.  MyRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • DHR Health is now offering a new treatment in Edinburg and Brownsville for patients whose high blood pressure does not respond to medication. The outpatient procedure uses a catheter inserted through the femoral artery — a minimally invasive technique — and is approved by the FDA for same-day discharge.  MyRGV
  • The Texas Animal Health Commission is converting vacant roles into inspector positions to monitor fly traps and livestock along the border to stop the spread of the New World screwworm from northern Mexico — officials will review if more inspectors are needed in the Rio Grande Valley.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sharyland ISD is rallying support as local businesses decorate storefronts in red and white for the Rattlers’ state title game in Round Rock Friday. The school will sell $20 t-shirts on Wednesday to raise funds for the team.  KRGV
