  • A fire destroyed a Brownsville home near Old Ebony Parkway and Cedar Elm Road on Thursday night—fire investigators say a short circuit started the blaze—and though the family escaped safely, they lost their cat.  KRGV

  • Brownsville hosted its second annual Space Festival downtown Friday — the City of Brownsville, its Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Office of Space Commerce and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation joined forces to celebrate space innovation.  City of Brownsville

  • Brownsville student Felicity Fok from Veterans Memorial qualified for National History Day after winning first place at Texas History Day—she will perform her 10-minute act on Tuesday, June 10 in College Park to share a story of workers' rights.  MyRGV
  • The Brownsville Public Library System will launch its 2025 Summer Reading Program in June & invite readers of all ages to explore a range of books and new ideas.  City of Brownsville
  • Brownsville ISD is celebrating its graduation season as several ceremonies have been held recently — Lopez Early College High School is having its ceremony today at Sams Memorial Stadium for 425 students. Earlier, 395 seniors earned associate degrees from Texas Southmost College and 110 top graduates received $1,000 scholarships from the Superintendent’s Scholarship Golf Tournament.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning, the Starbase City Commission voted 3-0 to borrow about $1.5 million from SpaceX to cover operating costs until Sept. 30—City Administrator Kent Myers said repayment is planned for January after new property tax rates are set. Officials added that a second financing package will be recommended in either August or September—ensuring coverage for expenses from Oct. 1 to January.  ValleyCentral

  • Nine townhouses at the BCC Village Townhouses were completed at the Brownsville Country Club area and Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham held a ribbon cutting on May 29—Brownsville Mayor John Cowen said the new affordable housing project will help working families and boost the local market.
