ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation held its first annual Space Symposium last Wednesday at Texas Southmost College—this event marked a key step in growing our region’s role in the aerospace industry.  City of Brownsville
  • At a groundbreaking ceremony on May 22, GBIC CEO Gilberto Salinas announced that the Greater Brownsville Tech District on FM 511 between Old Alice Road and Paredes Line Road will cover 770 acres when complete — the first phase will develop 86 acres with 13 lots and 1.3 million square feet of industrial space. Salinas said the park is expected to interest companies in the space, energy, advanced manufacturing, and possibly AI sectors — further plans will be shared as development continues.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House passed Senate Bill 6 on Tuesday to give ERCOT more control of power plants and electric lines so it can cut power during emergencies—this change aims to push large energy users to build backup systems. The Senate will review the amendments and may adjust the bill before it becomes law.  KURV
  • Rep. Vicente Gonzalez met with Congressional Hispanic Caucus colleagues and top Mexican officials and said a tax on remittances will drive money underground, harming families and the local economy+ Mexican officials urged that the rate be reduced to zero since the current 3.5% falls short of protecting vital transfers.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • May is National Stroke Awareness Month—Brownsville health officials urge residents to learn the signs of a stroke, such as sudden numbness, difficulty speaking, and severe headache, and to call 911 immediately if symptoms occur.
