  • The family of Staff Sergeant Omar Flores, who was killed by an IED in 2006 while serving in Iraq, continues to honor his memory every day by raising funds for a new monument at the Museum of South Texas in Edinburg — with shirts available at Green Beret McAllen.  ValleyCentral
  • On Memorial Day, dozens of Brownsville residents joined an annual silent march to honor fallen war heroes. The mile-long march ended at Brownsville Veterans Park, where speakers paid tribute and Juanita Anguiano marched to remember her son who died in 2023 while serving in Iraq.  KRGV
  • Los Amigos restaurant in La Feria honored veterans on Memorial Day by offering free meals between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. at its 105 South Main Street location—owner Alfredo Gomez said the gesture thanked veterans for their service.  ValleyCentral

  • The family of a Brownsville man is hurting after 26-year-old Azareel Martinez Jr. was shot and killed in Davenport, Florida when his stepdad, Kelly Garcia, grabbed a gun during an argument that began when his 9-year-old brother played video games & Garcia now faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful storage of a firearm.  ValleyCentral

  • During RGV StartUp Week, Rolando Gonzalez from Gobar Systems said Brownsville is missing chances to work with Index Matamoros—makers of $8 billion in goods—and urged local leaders to boost advanced manufacturing training at UTRGV.   • The Texas Workforce Commission is accepting applications for disaster unemployment assistance for workers and self-employed individuals in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties who lost work due to damage from March storms and floods—applicants can apply online or by phone on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.  KRGV
