CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville Police say they are tracking a string of Jeep Gladiator thefts after a 14-year-old suspect was found driving a stolen vehicle reported from a hotel parking lot on Monday—officers say he led a chase that hit several vehicles and that criminals are using minors for fast cash.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials noted that the Port of Brownsville ranked 41st among the nation’s top 150 ports for waterborne cargo in 2023—moving 11.2 million tons, which is a 23% increase over the previous year. The port celebrated its 89th anniversary and will deepen its channel to 52 feet next year—allowing larger ships and enhancing navigational safety while spurring local job growth.  MyRGV
  • Real estate broker Maricarmen Cadena said at a panel in downtown Brownsville that nearshoring companies bypassed Tamaulipas in 2021 and 2022 in favor of states with strong auto zones like Nuevo Leon & others. She said Reynosa and Matamoros have over one million square feet of ready space and a prepared workforce to attract manufacturers in the near future.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • The City of Brownsville continues work on its downtown wastewater project — motorists are advised to expect traffic delays in the area.  City of Brownsville

  • The Brownsville Police Department is working with the Texas Department of Transportation on the Click It or Ticket campaign that began on May 19 and will run until June 1 to remind all vehicle passengers to buckle up; the initiative aims to boost seatbelt use in every ride.  City of Brownsville
