  • A Brownsville lottery ticket for $78M was claimed on May 8 by South Dakota-based Jua-Ri Trust Agreement Trident Trust Company Inc. + it paid a cash value of $43,757,223.10 before taxes six days before expiration.  MyRGV

CULTURE NEWS

  • UTRGV art students curated the 'sonder' exhibition at the new Mitte Arts and Cultural Center where senior final projects are on display until May 30 (under the guidance of professor Romeo Di Loreto).  MyRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local officials announced the La Feria Scholarship Breakfast Ceremony 2026 to honor student achievements at a local venue. Details — including timing and location — are expected to be shared soon.  Cameron County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VFW Post 2410 holds a groundbreaking ceremony today in Brownsville to launch a project supporting local veterans. County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr and Commissioner Pct.1 Sofia C. Benavides attended the event (other county officials also participated).  Cameron County
  • After power outages last weekend affected 25,000 customers due to storm-damaged transmission lines, Brownsville Public Utilities Board advises residents to use surge protectors, disconnect electronics during outages, and build emergency kits before hurricane season begins (the board also suggested flashlights and outdoor generators).  KRGV
  • Cameron County Public Works is offering debris pickup for storm-damaged items from May 13 to May 19 in the Green Valley Farms area. Residents should place vegetative and construction debris along the roadway (do not bag and keep clear of obstructions) to ensure proper collection.  Cameron County
  • Pharr Bridge Director Luis Bazan supported Daniel Covarrubias’s proposal for a unified customs agency for the U.S. and Mexico during a meeting with Rep. Henry Cuellar at Pharr Economic Development Corporation. The discussion focused on easing cargo delays and streamlining border operations.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • San Benito city leaders voted to rename Cesar Chavez Day to Community and Labor Heritage Day to better honor farmworkers in light of recent allegations - the new holiday will be observed on the Monday after Good Friday and Easter Sunday next year, offering a 4-day weekend for some businesses.  KRGV
