COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Palmview has secured $230,000 in state and federal funds to build a half-mile hike-and-bike trail near Bentsen Palm Drive and La Homa Road. Work will begin next year to boost local health and fitness options.  KRGV
  • Korner Market (attached to the Samano Building) is now open on Elizabeth Street in downtown Brownsville offering healthy food, while the building provides 40 income-based supportive housing units for single individuals—30 of which are already occupied with all expected by the end of June.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cameron County leaders, including Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, signed a Regional Benefit Agreement at the Dancy Building to boost regional workforce alignment, attract investment & create jobs. The pact lays out a plan for coordinated economic growth among partnered communities.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twelve Rio Grande Valley high school seniors were surprised with full ride college scholarships exceeding $50,000 each from the Texas National Bank TNB Foundation on Friday. Harlingen High School senior Emily Corona will attend UT San Antonio to study law and help support families — a milestone for community success.  KRGV
  • The Brownsville Navigation District awarded 32 graduating seniors $1,000 scholarships on May 8 as part of its Port of Brownsville Scholarship Program. The awards honor academic achievement, leadership, and community service and support students enrolling in college, university, or technical institutions.  Port of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brownsville Police Department promoted Edna-Mae Mata to lieutenant Friday, making her the first woman to hold the rank in department history. Mata started as a dispatcher in 2012 and became an officer in 2017.  KRGV
  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a statewide review to ensure schools display the Ten Commandments as mandated by law. McAllen ISD said it would comply while Brownsville ISD stated that it will display posters once sufficient donations are received + both districts are working to meet requirements.  MyRGV
  • U.S. Sen. Cornyn visited the Texas A&M Rio Grande Valley Advanced Manufacturing Hub at the Port of Brownsville on April 10 to join a roundtable on workforce training and regional job opportunities. Local officials and industry partners discussed plans to enhance employment programs in the area.  Port of Brownsville
