  • Yesterday, Brownsville earned its Tree City USA designation for the 26th consecutive year—showing its strong commitment to urban forestry and community greening.  City of Brownsville
  • The BCIC approved over $5 million to boost quality of life in Brownsville—this funding will support local projects that improve infrastructure and public services. The grants will be used soon to help enhance neighborhood amenities and community resources.  City of Brownsville
  • Brownsville earned Gold Star status as a Keep Texas Beautiful affiliate on May 6 for its work in keeping public spaces clean—officials said the honor recognizes the city's focused efforts in beautification.  City of Brownsville

  • A 3D-printed Starbucks opened in Brownsville on May 6—using new printing technology to build its structure—and marks the nation’s first store of its kind. City officials say the innovative design may lead to faster construction and lower costs for future locations.  City of Brownsville

CRIME NEWS

  • CBP officers seized more than $184K in unreported currency during a routine inspection at the Brownsville-Matamoros International Bridge on Friday—finding cash hidden in a 2022 Fiat, on the driver, and on a female passenger—and arrested both individuals as Homeland Security Investigations takes over the case.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Veterans Memorial Early College High School senior Sophia C. Acevedo-Gomez won the annual 34th Congressional District art contest—one of three from Brownsville ISD—and her painting 'Unspoken Empathy' will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol tunnel for one year. A reception later this year will honor the winners, and Acevedo-Gomez may receive a $3,000 art scholarship if she applies and is accepted.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brownsville City Commission honored Commissioner At-Large B Dr. Rose M.Z. Gowen on Tuesday night for 16 years of service to the community—recognizing her long record of dedication—and celebrated her impact on city governance.  City of Brownsville
  • Yesterday (May 6th), the Cameron County Commissioners' Court unanimously advanced a Regional Master Drainage Plan application to the Texas Water Development Board to address drainage issues in Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo Counties. The decision sets the stage for future funding and infrastructure improvements and reflects a collaborative effort (involving local governments) to tackle regional challenges.  Cameron County
  • After BCIC approved over $5 million, Brownsville will start projects to upgrade parks and drainage systems to reduce flooding—city officials say these upgrades will improve the community's daily life.
