  • Over 1,000 Brownsville public utility customers lost power Saturday morning when a sparking wire caused outages in several neighborhoods (Wildrose Lane, Barnard, Las Mananitas, Tropical Drive, Old Alice Road, Greenway Drive, Woodruff, Tulane, and Loma Linda Avenue). ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An SUV rollover crash last night at Washington Street and Palm Boulevard left one man hospitalized in stable but critical condition after the vehicle hit the Brownsville ISD Central Administration building—sparking local calls for traffic cameras as residents urge tougher road safety measures.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old man was shot in rural Weslaco at 1:46 a.m. Saturday when unknown individuals declared the party over and fired gunshots, leaving him in critical condition — investigators report a Hispanic male in a red Ford Mustang fled the scene.  MyRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Glenn Hamer of the Texas Association of Business said high tariffs must be reduced swiftly to protect Texas exporters and consumers—trade shifts on April 2nd have raised concerns over rising costs. He added that a 90-day tariff pause and new deals for USMCA goods will support investments from companies like Nvidia and Apple—plans aimed at leveling the playing field for small businesses.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Pricklypear cactus, the state plant, shows off delicate and colorful blooms along local roadsides and parks from April to early June. The flowers rely on sunlight and attract pollinators (bees, moths, hummingbirds) to help form fruit.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting showed that over 90% of Starbase voters supported incorporation with more than 120 ballots cast on Saturday and a protest held at Boca Chica Beach. Mayor Bobby Peden and commissioners Jenna Petrzelka and Jordan Buss, who ran unopposed, will be officially seated when the county judge signs the order in about two weeks—sparking plans for more housing, hospitals and schools.  ValleyCentral
  • Residents of Boca Chica Village cast early votes with 173 for and 4 against creating the City of Starbase as a Type C general law municipality; if approved, the new city will have a commission form of government (a mayor and two commissioners) to manage local services.  ValleyCentral
  • On Saturday, Cameron County voters rejected a ballot proposition to use hotel occupancy tax revenues to fund a 10,000-seat arena at the Madeira development on I-69E - the measure was defeated by 6,272 votes to 9,769 ballots cast. This marked the third time voters turned down the proposal after similar rejections in November 2021 and May 2022.  MyRGV
