CRIME NEWS

  • A Brownsville woman, Maria Mendez (73), was arrested on April 25 after Animal Control found one severely malnourished dog among four at a home on the 2000 block of E. 22nd Street following a March 31 call, after she admitted she could no longer financially care for the animals.  ValleyCentral

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville ISD students' artwork was chosen from 94 entries in the Congressional Art Competition — Congressman Vicente Gonzalez announced the winners Friday morning — and will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol later this month.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. on the eve of the election said he supports using visitor tax revenue to help fund a 10,000-seat arena project at the Madeira development along I-69E between Brownsville and Harlingen. He stressed that the tax will only jump start the project without raising property taxes—voters will decide on the proposition on tomorrow’s ballot.  MyRGV
  • SpaceX will conduct TXDOT-approved transportation operations on State Hwy 4 on May 5-6 and May 6-7 from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. and the nearly two-hour operation is expected to cause brief traffic delays while the highway and beach remain open.  Cameron County
  • Three people with deep SpaceX ties are running unopposed to head the planned Starbase city, which will include the launch site and homes for company workers if nearly 300 voters approve the plan today. Each candidate agreed to limit political contributions to $1,110 while details on their future plans remain unknown.  KRGV
  • Civil rights groups filed a lawsuit on behalf of Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez's family after the 8-year-old died in Border Patrol custody in Harlingen in 2023 following repeated pleas for medical care. The suit—seeking $15 million in damages—comes after an investigation found that her chronic condition was ignored while in detention.  KRGV
